Star trek: Voyager 7.10a - Q2

Stardate 54704.5

Episode propaganda

It's not easy being a parent, even for a Q. Because Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of the USS Voyager were instrumental in Q's (John de Lancie) quest to have a child (Keegan de Lancie), he decides to make "Aunt Kathy" teach his son some responsible virtues. Although appearing to be fully grown, the younger Q proves harder to handle than his irascible father, and with his omnipotent powers, disciplining the youngster proves not only impossible, but exceptionally dangerous as well.

Intelligence report

The Federation way is the best way.

Like all the other "fish out of water" Star trek stories, Q2 takes a spoiled brat and turns them into a sane, useful, contributing member of society. In the main cast alone, it has happened to Neelix, B'Elanna, Tom and Seven. They have all been redeemed and it's past time that someone went the other way. That the salvation is unsought (at least by the one being saved) and that it's being brought to an omnipotent being makes little difference, you will be made over into a Federation automaton with all the political correctness that implies.

That Keegan was cast as the adolescent Q (the character having been conceptualised, conceived and birthed in The Q and the grey) is nepotism, but that's ok as he has John's and the continuum's mannerisms down pat and he certainly looks the part. He and Manu play off each other well as the wild child and the geek stuck together by an accident of age. Itchy and Q-ball are great nicknames, too. There's too often too little sense of fun in the 24th century (Or is it the 23rd? I can never remember).

As for the effect on the Q Continuum, well, time will tell. Same Trek time, same Trek channel...

PS: This is the shortest title in the Star trek pantheon.
