Surprisingly, this is not about technobabble, although there is lots for the technophile to um... er... phile. It's more about interpersonal relationships and drama and that.
Actually, Tom's self-obsession notwithstanding, this is a good, intense episode that's worth watching for its entertainment value. The
"terrible reward brought by success" is a terrible reward, indeed, definitely not worth the reward of travelling an infinite distance in zero time (it's forced evolution, not in any way controllable). And, of course, there's the technobabble.
I should probably remind some folk that the warp scale was recalibrated between The original series and The next generation. So where Kirk took the Bird of Prey back in time to find the Whales by travelling at warp 25 (or, 25 times warp 1), warp 10 now represents the maximum: infinite speed. It's kind of like upgrading from a 386 to a Pentium III.
What was that about technobabble? Oh yes, the mating practices of certain species are investigated in this episode, too, and you'll never believe Who does it...
