Episode propaganda

The USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), picks up a distress call from a vessel, crashed on Talos IV. Despite not being fully recovered from a recent, disastrous mission, in which several crew members died, they go to investigate. At the crash site, Pike is kidnapped by the enigmatic Talosians...

Intelligence report

Poor old Captain Pike, doomed to be re-written by a society not yet ready for anti-heroes; his tired, sensitive, introspective personality couldn't make it past the marketing department.

And even to modern eyes, this episode is somewhat unfulfilling. The "It's all a dream" thing just isn't acceptable anymore: those cynics among Trek viewers demand hard questions and harder answers (don't you just hate the holodeck episodes in the contemporary Star trek shows?) - shame on them for not knowing what the future would be like! The sets are hokey, the effects are hokey, the dialogue and acting are stuck in the 60s, what can I say but that this would never sell as a pilot today, just as it didn't back then. It's interesting as a piece of history but not much more.
