A new life-form, code-named Tin Man has been detected in Romulan space. The Enterprise aims to reach it before the Romulans and has on board a specialist in first contact with beings, the Betazoid Tam Elbrum (Harry Groener). Unfortunately, his empathic mind cannot tolerate the intrusive thoughts of those around him, and his sanity is slowly being eroded. Meanwhile, the Tin Man provides some surprises.
