The USS Yamato is in the Romulan border examining remains of an extinct civilisation called the Iconians. Remains which indicate the Iconians had knowledge that could tip the balance of power between the Romulans and the UFP. The Yamato is suddenly destroyed, not by the Romulans but by its own failing computer systems. Then the Enterprise's systems begin to fail.
