Data is ordered to serve under Commander Bruce Maddox (Brian Brophy) who wants to disassemble and study him. Data is not very keen on this idea and resigns from Starfleet. Maddox then disputes Data's ability to resign as he is not a sentient being. He is an android and therefore property of Starfleet. The scene is the set for a courtroom drama with Riker prosecuting!
