A special exchange program brings Benzite Ensign Mendon (John Putch) aboard the Enterprise and gives Riker the opportunity to become the first Starfleet officer to serve aboard a Klingon ship - the Pagh . While Worf endeavours to teach Riker the seemingly barbaric code that maintains command aboard a Klingon ship, a virulent strain of bacteria is eroding the hull of the Pagh.
