Episode propaganda
There have been some changes on board the Enterprise. Doctor Crusher has left, leaving Wesley behind to continue his training. She has been replaced by Doctor Pulaski (Diana Muldaur), a lady who speaks her mind! Geordi has been promoted to chief engineer and we meet the mysterious Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg). Guinan tends bar in Ten Forward and is confidante to most of the crew; including Jean-Luc Picard!
Deanna Troi is penetrated by an unseen being, the result is a rapid pregnancy and the birth of a son. This is potentially disastrous as the Enterprise is also transporting a very nasty virus.

Intelligence report
There should be a law against writers who make up amazing co-incidences just so that their story can have a happy (or sad) ending. Given the size of the universes it is essentially impossible for two significant events to happen within the influence of each other. Bastards.
On the other hand, we get to see Maternity and Marina Sirtis acting her rocks off.
