The Enterprise is on a mission to transport emissaries of two warring races, the Anticans and the Celle, to Parliament for negotiations. En route, they encounter a cloud consisting entirely of energy. As they pass close enough to make a sensor sweep, a bolt of energy strikes Worf, who is in sensor maintenance, knocking him out.

The energy moves from Worf to Beverly while she's examining him. Worf doesn't remember anything since the energy struck him and Beverley is in something of a daze. She heads to the bridge where the energy transfers to the ship's computer. Then the warp core and several other systems shut down, leaving the Enterprise stranded in space...

Then half the crew are possessed by an alien entity, wander about the ship like zombies and no-one notices. Then there are the strange malfunctions with no apparent cause. Hello? You drive straight through an energy cloud and you expect nothing to happen? And these are supposed to be the finest minds in the Federation?
