Episode propaganda
In the Gamma Quadrant, Dax (Terry Farrell) insists on investigating a planet surrounded by an energy barrier. But the barrier cripples the Defiant and causes Kira (Nana Visitor) to be duplicated for a moment - she will die without eventual medical attention back on DS9.
A colony lives on the planet, and the leader, Miranda O'Brien (Jennifer S Parsons), reveals that in two days, when the Defiant departs, the barrier will cause the ship to crash on the planet - 200 years in the past. Stranded for life, the crew will found this colony. The planet, Gaia, is populated by their descendants!

Intelligence report
A nice, juicy moral dilemma. A nice, juicy selection of moral reactions. Some really good extrapolations. Hard questions with hard answers.
For some reason the writers of DS9 have an easier time playing around with the characters' lives, in a way that Voyager and The next generation hasn't and didn't achieve. It's a whole lot grittier than the other two shows, perhaps because it's not so Starfleet (ie it's full of Bajorans, the Dominion, Ferengi, Klingons and Cardassians). This is a good thing, in my humble opinion.
