I vaguely remember The original series episode on which this one is based (Mirror, mirror), but that's all right because you only need to know who Kirk and Spock were to understand what's going on. It's good to have old stories followed up: gives a better sense of continuity, and solves a few interesting questions (like "Whatever happened to...?").
The best part of this episode is that everyone displays different characteristics depending upon their new situation (eg Quark, Odo, Sisko), especially Kira as the Intendent (sex on Star trek, who said it would never happen?) worth watching, especially as the parallel universe idea crops up in later seasons.
