The first foray into Bajoran politics, which are mixed inseparably with Bajoran religion, which makes for some damn fine bun fights.
This episode also introduces the Vedeks Winn and Bareil, leaders of the conservative and liberal factions of their religion. It also introduces Kira's religious stance, and provides the beginning of a lot of bad blood from all sorts of quarters. Remember that Opaka was trapped in the Gamma Quadrant and the position of Kai must be filled from the ranks of the Vedeks. The jockeying for position that is going on is wonderful to watch. It must be something like this when the Roman Catholics elect a new Pope.
A must-see and damn fine end to the first season.
