Theatrical report

I didn't get it, so I read the production notes and I still didn't get it. I had been sitting in the cinema for almost more than 1½ hours and still didn't get it. I didn't laugh once, and judging by the direction of the laughter around me it was from strategically placed employees of the production company. I had not been given advanced notice about the screening being secure - security staff confiscate mobile phones & other electronic devices - and afterwards I cannot understand why they did it. A secure screening is usually reserved for the action or blockbuster films because of their popularity; this is not a blockbuster. I give high praise to Jefferson Sage for his production design. I did not see any other set pieces or design matches to other films and he deserves high credit for the three distinctly different layouts he created including Sodom which - as per the production notes - was very creatively designed to produce a definitely structure of a complete city (despite being no larger than 1 acre).

Sorry Mr Ramis, but I would not have cast Jack Black in the lead, for the same reasons you did select him; he's so far out of the box as to be in a different dimension and I think you needed a more centralised and jovial comedian for the role. However, given the current pool of talent floating around in the ether that makes up the laughing stock of Hollywood, I cannot seeing another (living) tadpole being any better. Mr Cera was an excellent pick as the side-kick, however, because his straight-faced humour is more enjoyable.

The adventure, comedy movie Year One is directed by Harold Ramis and stars Jack Black, Michael Cera, Olivia Wilde.
