Theatrical report

It's not often that I want Them™ to turn the volume up (usually, if I'm complaining then I'm wanting it turned down) but in the case of U2 3D, up is what I wanted. Sure, the music filled the Imax cinema perfectly but I wanted more! I wanted to feel the bass pounding in my chest. I wanted to abuse my hearing. And, as that's the only real complaint one can make about a film then you know it's something pretty good.

The concert itself is a show and a half. The bloody big video wall is bloody big. You could put my house on the stage and still see what's going on. There's plenty of variety in the content (live shots of the performers, animations, text, colour) and it matches the music extremely well. There wasn't a point where I wanted them to stop showing us how clever they were and turn the bloody thing off.

As for the music, well, I stopped listening to U2 after Joshua Tree because, having reached the pinnacle of performance, there was nowhere for them to go but down. Mind you, they are still U2, so negative vertical movement from Joshua Tree is still a lot better than most bands on the planet.

But the best show in town was the crowd outside the Casa Rosada crying "One love, one life"; they make the whole movie become more than just another wanky music video. If you've ever been at a great concert then you'll see looks on faces that are exactly the way you felt on the inside. Ah, the agony and the ecstasy. And almost the entire audience sat through the end credits. Only the geeks sit through the end credits! But this time, no-one wanted the show to end. You know that's a good concert.

The 3d technology is good and getting getter but the best shots are the long ones (of the audience) or the tight ones of the drum kit. I can't say that the film needed to be in 3d but it's a fun selling point.

The concert, music movie U2 3D is directed by Catherine Owens, Mark Pellington and stars Bono, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr, The Edge.
