Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross' (Hailee Steinfeld) father has been shot in cold blood by the coward Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), and she is determined to bring him to justice. Enlisting the help of a trigger-happy, drunken US Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), she sets out with him - over his objections - to hunt down Chaney. Her father's blood demands that she pursue the criminal into Indian territory and find him before a Texas Ranger named LeBoeuf (Matt Damon) catches him and brings him back to Texas for the murder of another man.

I haven't read the book. I don't remember the film (with John Wayne). I'm not a big fan of westerns. I don't ride a horse. I like to bathe several times a day. I can solve all my issues without shooting someone (so far). I'm not a leather queen. I like indoor plumbing. These are enough reasons for me to not like True grit, but it turns out that this film is ok. Joel and Ethan Coen have injected it with a lot of humour, which westerns tend to lack, so it's easier to sit through than I was expecting. The story is a pretty standard tale of bad men, horses and revenge but there's still plenty to keep you occupied. Hailee Steinfeld, the little girl, is hilarious. So grown up yet so young; the wild west doesn't leave much time for mollycoddling. Matt Damon is funny. Don't see that enough. Josh Brolin is just plain evil. Jeff Bridges is everything you expect, unless you just saw Tron: Legacy, in which case it's just plain weird. You can enjoy True grit, or not, it's up to you rather than the film.
