Theatrical report
Trekkies. And Trekkers, but I don't use that term because it's élitist.
Meanwhile, if you consider yourself to be any sort of Trekkie then you have to watch this film to see what the hard-core Trekkies in the USA are up to. No matter how geeky you are, how fanatical, how intense, how over the top, don't worry, the Yanks have someone who's doing it 100 times more excessively. That's a cultural thing. Yanks are excessive about everything.
As a documentary, Trekkies is pretty bland: go here, go there, record a few talking heads and follow a few fans through their day. There's none of the heart and soul that you see in a documentary like Cunnamulla. Even though trekdom is a phenomenon almost as large as Star trek itself, there's no notion of it having changed anyone's life in a fundamental manner. Like the interviewees, it's very white, suburban, middle-class. It's a shame when even the radicals are pretty normal people.
Still, there's a whole heap of great Trek stuff, from grabs with the stars to some looks at conventions. If you've never been to one, you really have to, if only to see what they're like.
