Theatrical report

Crouching toaster, hidden dish cloth.

Straight from the streets of Hong Kong comes a heap of running, shooting, hitting, kicking and babes. Why do I compare it to Crouching tiger, hidden dragon with just a hint of irony? Because they are both action films from Asia that yearn to amaze with awesome action, the tiger in a deep and meaningful, historic way, the toaster in a hard edged glass and steel, modern one. Oh, and no-one in the USA will get the point (in the former it's philosophical, in the latter, it's also philosophical, just a different philosophy).

Both films also investigate the differences between word and deed. For some people the word is the deed, for others the word is just a sound. If that's too Zen for you, grasshopper: tough. It's time you learned a little more about the inside world.

For those of a less philosophical bent, Tokyo raiders is a trashy action movie bashed out of a mould in an Asian sweat shop. The production values are low, the fight skills are more flashy than realistic and the values are strictly patriarchal. the dubbing into English by American actors doesn't help any, either, as all the voices are an octave too deep but since the dialogue was written by the scriptwriter from a porn movie it adds a touch of blackish humour.

Tokyo raiders is Asian action fluff for Asian action buffs. Watch it with that in mind and you'll end up with a smile on your face.
