The story of a young woman, Melanie (Reese Witherspoon), from a white trash background who runs away from her husband, Jake Perry (Josh Lucas), in Alabama and reinvents herself as a New York socialite. When her Park Avenue boyfriend (Patrick Dempsey), whose mother (Candice Bergen) is the Mayor of New York City, proposes marriage, she returns home to tell her parents and obtain a divorce from her husband. In doing so, she is confronted with her past and must choose between the men.

A romantic comedy about the choice between living the high life in the big city or living the low life in down home Alabammy. This being a "post-feminist" world, the heroine chooses the low life and then makes her own high life. After all, girls can do anything. They can also have everything.
Reese is good but not striking. Josh and Patrick are both marriage material, Patrick more so, and Candice really is the mayor of New York city. The rednecks aren't too scary and Melanie's outing of Bobby Ray is both funny and sensitive to gay men (this being the Age of Political Correctness).
Sweet home Alabama is a fun chick flick and you even get to hear the song (but not for too long - don't want to scare of the city folk). Y'all have fun.
