I'm not normally one of the first people to comment negatively on American Comedy but with Superbad I must. It wasn't funny; similar to my opinions of Kath & Kim and Ab Fab, I was not humorously entertained. There was too much going on that while having humorous intentions was pushed a little too far into comedic-drama for my tastes. The whole film I think was intended to remain a hard comedy, but the director may have preferred to keep a more light-hearted angle on most of the action. This is not to say that it's a bad movie because it isn't. By now, most people have seen enough films to understand that everyone ends on a positive note, but the intermittent scenes strongly push you towards thinking otherwise. While the actions of the characters was not surprising most of the time, there are going to be times when you think you can predict what's going to happen next - and it doesn't. Worth seeing at the cinemas it will have you thinking more than the average comedy will (see Joe Somebody, American Pie). This is another fine example of American cinematography that reminds me that not all comedies have to be slap-stick or black. Do you remember, Joe versus the Volcano? That film had a definite mission as the story unfolded and it was funny if you looked at it on an unusual angle. Similar to that movie, with Superbad you can't help worrying that the post-production people may have gone a little over-board in their comedic attempts.
