Movie propaganda

Having grown up with her mother in Nevada, Heidi (Rachael Taylor) hasn't spoken to her father since she was seven. Now a young woman, haunted by his memory, she returns to Australia seeking closure. Travelling to her hometown on a shoestring, Heidi is forced to hitch-hike and busk for cash. Her talent on the violin gains the attention of handsome orange grove owner Michael (Alex Dimitriades), who offers Heidi a ride. Both are initially guarded, but an unexpected connection soon blossoms.

Fleeing to Michael's orange grove after a family reunion turns sour, Heidi finds the escape and camaraderie she craves. Whilst Michael seems conflicted over Heidi's presence, it's picking season and he is soon immersed in the colourful surrounds and offbeat characters of the arriving citrus pickers. However, when Heidi drops her guard and reveals her feelings, Michael struggles to reciprocate, his wit and charm masking a tortured soul. As the past unravels, Michael and Heidi are forced to confront the future, discovering that their lives and secrets are better shared.

Closure is just the beginning.

Theatrical report

It must be something to do with citrus orchards in desert countries because Summer coda feels a lot like The lemon tree (Etz limon), even though they have little else in common (other than irrigated citrus). Meanwhile, Alex Dimitriades takes a leap and a bound away from Wog boys 2: Kings of Mykonos by appearing as a sympathetic country hotty in a film that's worth watching, if you're into romances. He's sexy, he's tanned, he's damaged goods. There's nothing a girl likes more than a man with a mysterious past, especially if it involves him having a broken heart that needs mending. You just love to fix us blokes, don't you? Rachael Taylor is also a hotty with a mysterious past but she flashes her tits in the bath and that's all that boys need to know. And pretty much all that they'll notice from then on in.

A lot of what feels good about this film is that the on-screen chemistry between the young actors, a diverse group, is so good. They look like they're having fun together, and that's always a recipe for success. There are tensions, there are small moments, there are intimacies, there are bust-ups, there are laughs, there are fun times. It makes you want to go out and pick oranges in the Victorian desert (watch out for the snakes). It's a bit weird seeing Nathan Phillips and Cassandra Magrath together in the desert because the last time that happened, it was at Wolf Creek. Actually, this whole film could be a horror/thriller nightmare. Innocent young girl travels to remote outback town and gets caught up in a series of murders among the orange trees...

Maybe I'll just get my oranges from the supermarket.
