Movie propaganda

Sucker punch is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what's real and what is imaginary.

She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls - the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) - to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm). Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurai to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey - if they succeed - will set them free.

Theatrical report

Sucker punch is not the worst movie I've ever seen but the second worst. It was bad in soooo many ways that I choose to only highlight 3  and explain why even Justin Bieber fans should not buy this film in the Kmart bargain bin.

  1. There is way too much going on; too many plots and story and action assaulting your senses doesn't give your mind enough time to catch-up and/or follow along. I think I understood what Zack Snyder was trying to achieve & evoke but unfortunately he over-complicated things. It's like trying to force a stone to absorb water.
  2. The "mind's eye" theme should only be taken so far; until human-kind are able to wrap their heads around the physical existence of 5 dimensions (footballers have demonstrated that they understand 4 dimensions) don't do story-within-a-story-within-a-story-within-a-story, because in the end you run out of time to trying to wrap up the layers and tie them together.
  3. Writer, director, screenplay, producer… this is looking more and more like a one-man show. Hollywood was built by people who could network, and even Mel Gibson doesn't try to do all the work himself; you become too involved with looking up your own arsehole and lose sight of the bigger picture. Quite often the director & producer are at odds due to financial constraints or creativity but Mr Snyder got around that by approving his own changes by consulting the man who was writing the cheques – himself.

The action, fantasy, thriller movie Sucker punch is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone.
