Theatrical report

Bing! Bang! Boom! Kapow!

Starship troopers is a hyper-violent action film with outstanding special effects in every second scene, and more blood and gunk than you can wipe off with a whole roll of paper towels. Turn your brain off and ride the roller coaster, or go into deconstructivist mode and see a razor sharp political commentary. Or do both. (However, you should willingly suspend your disbelief when it comes to timelines and subtle sexist behaviour.)

The special effects are worth seeing for themselves, but the story is so rivetingly funny and adventuresome that you get more than your money's worth. It's a popcorn & coke film that will have you laughing out loud, cringing in revulsion, and cheering in respect for its egotistic idealism.

At this point I will mention that Starship troopers is an utterly fabulous B-movie that was always in danger from the day they cast a male lead who is prettier than any of the females, but there is a great sense of irony (Paul Verhoeven, the director, is European, not American), especially in the informative/internet type broadcasts from the Federal government, so despite its flaws, it works.

Oh, bugger the critique, just enjoy the bloody film!
