Theatrical report

There's something really creepy about The Special Relationship and I think it's Dennis Quaid's make-up. Apart from that, however, you get a real insight into the way that politics works. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours (caveat: If it suits me). You are my enemy but if I can get some benefit from being your friend then I will be your friend. My word is my bond unless I change my mind.

Politicians are not people you want to be around. If you do then your are a bad person. As the saying goes, "Politicians are like underpants: they should be changed frequently, for the same reason."

The Special Relationship is not The West Wing on the big screen, nor is it Yes, Minister. It's the third in a trilogy of Tony Blair films, the first of which (The deal) aired on British TV while the second of which is The Queen. He's a relatively interesting dude if you're a member of the British Empire (or even a former one) but his main role in life seems to be playing second fiddle to the real players: Her Maj, Princess Di, Bill, George W. Now he's up before an inquiry into his dodgy deal with George. Sucks to be him, but at least he gave it a go. The film also gives it a go but like Tone, it never quite makes it to the top tier. Somehow, even with all the money that's been chucked at it, this movie still seems like it was made for TV. Perhaps that's because the story is about the underdog (imagine a political movie about John Howard and George Bush and see who comes out as top dog). This is an interesting film for followers of politics and history but not for lovers of drama.

The politics, true, UK movie The Special Relationship is directed by Richard Loncraine and stars Michael Sheen, Dennis Quaid, Helen McCrory.
