Melba May (Park Overall) is a trailer park princess living with her trucker husband Flint (Don Harvey) in the desert town of Victorville, California USA. She embellishes her trailer, finding beauty in the dirt and grime of the trailer park. When she catches her husband in bed with her friend Hurricane (Sheila Tousey), she moves in with her beautician mother, Sherri (Grace Zabriskie), a bonafide home-shopping addict, who convinces Melba to call a psychic friend. The psychic predicts that Melba will meet "three kings".

Enter Trent (Jamie Kennedy), Brad (Freddie Prinze Junior) and Joel (Steven Petrarca) - three recent university graduates from Los Angeles who are heading to Las Vegas to win enough money to pay their back rent. When their car breaks down in Victorville, they decide to kill time at a local bar where they meet Melba, who is out to celebrate her freedom. Trent names her "The Sparkler", commenting on her sequined gown which casts light like a disco ball. Melba asks the boys to dance, revealing that this is her first night out after 15 years of marriage. Trent explains their mission to Melba while dancing, and Brad brags of being a Hollywood agent, handing her his card. Triple A arrives and the boys depart, leaving Melba with notions of stardom dancing in her head.
