Movie propaganda
Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans...
Young restaurant owner Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos) is down on his luck. His girlfriend Nadine (Pheline Roggan) has moved to Shanghai, his Soul Kitchen customers are boycotting the new gourmet chef, and he's having back trouble! Things start looking up when the hip crowd embraces his revamped culinary concept, but that doesn't mend Zinos' broken heart. He decides to fly to China for Nadine, leaving the restaurant in the hands of his unreliable ex-con brother Illias (Moritz Bleibtreu). Both decisions turn out to be disastrous: Illias gambles away the restaurant to a shady real estate agent and Nadine has found a new lover! But brothers Zinos and Illias might still have one last chance to get Soul Kitchen back if they can stop arguing and work together as a team.

Theatrical report
You don't have to be German to be a Nazi who wants to take over the world but it sure helps. The German language at volume is particularly good for megalomaniacs to proclaim their programme for world domination. Even a discussion about the best way to cook sauerkraut sounds like the Nuremberg rallies. This has nothing to do with Soul Kitchen - there are no Nazis, no attempts at invading Poland - it's just an observation about German-language movies.
Meanwhile, this film is about semi-young people having adventures of the kind that grown-ups try to avoid: sex, loud music, parties, travel, romance, fighting, spur-of-the-moment decisions. There's nothing particularly German about it - other than the talking - so it has broad appeal, for those who can read the subtitles. This is a small film about a small-businessman and his small family. Enjoyable.
The comedy, Germany, romance movie Soul Kitchen is directed by Fatih Akin and stars Adam Bousdoukos, Moritz Bleibtreu, Pheline Roggan.
