Giovanni Sermonti (Nanni Moretti) is a psychiatrist running his own practice in an Italian seaside town. With his wife, Paola (Laura Morante), an art gallery owner, they have two smart, communicative children, an 18-year-old son, Andrea (Giuseppe Sanfelice), and 16-year-old Irene (Jasmine Trinca). They live a comfortable life and are a very close knit family. This tranquility is shattered when Andrea is killed in an accident.

The emotional impact of how each family member grieves is completely devastating yet deeply human.
