Rafael Belvedere (Ricardo Darín) is not happy with the life he leads. He can't communicate with his things, his people, he never has time. He's always zapping on TV and comforts himself by watching old episodes of his favourite show: El Zorro. At 42, he doesn't look at all like his fiction hero. Those childhood years when he put on the black cape, the mask, and pretended to be Diego de la Vega are long gone. His reality is much more complicated.

He can't reach anybody's expectations. He has no ideals, he only lives for the restaurant his father Nino Belvedere (Héctor Alterio) founded. He has a divorce behind him, he never took time off to see his daughter Vicky grow (Gimena Nóbile), he has no friends and prefers to elude any commitment with his girlfriend Naty (Natalia Verbeke). Furthermore, he hasn't seen his mother Norma (Norma Aleandro), who suffers from Alzheimer's and lives in a rest home, in a year. Rafael just wants to be left alone. He can't cope with everything and it seems his efforts aren't enough for anyone. But a series of unexpected events make Rafael take a look at his situation.

He'll take into account the possibility of selling the family restaurant, he'll meet again with an old childhood friend, Juan Carlos (Eduardo Blanco) who, despite having a personal tragedy on his shoulders, will help him in a very particular way to reconstruct his past and recover his present. And along the way, he'll support his father fulfil his mother's dream: get married in a church.

Theatrical report

Son of the bride is a slow-moving film about a man sorting out his life. It takes him a while. Ricardo Darín has been in some pretty good Spanish language films, including Nine queens, but this Spanish language film is what is known as "actorly", ie by, about and for actors. It is the kind of film that will most impress other actors and their hangers-on.

Art-house or die.
