The few, the proud, and the small.

Small soldiers is one huge adventure. meet the commando elite - toy action figures with an attitude. They've escaped from their boxes along with the Gorgonites, kind-hearted but unusual-looking creatures. Now teenager Alan Abernathy gets enlisted to help the Gorgonites and rescue the girl of his dreams before the whole town is turned upside down. Small soldiers is a spectacular adventure for the whole family!

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Phil Hartmann, Kevin Dunn and Dennis Leary. Voices by Tommy Lee Jones, Frank Langella, Ernest Borgnine and Christina Ricci.

Theatrical report

Toy story for the more action inclined child within us all.

But the best thing about this film is that it's even more fun for grown-ups than it is for the nippers. There are more in-jokes than you can shake a cliché at, and it actually manages to involve irony, although I should point out that Small soldiers was made by DreamWorks, which is the production house for Messirs Spielberg, Katzenberg and Geffen. these are the people who brought you Amistad (amongst other things).

The storyline is coherent (given the single requirement for wilful suspension of disbelief: that there is a computer chip out there which is capable of doing these things, although it may be here sooner than you realise), the gags are hilarious, the human characters are relatively stereotypical (although there are some surprisingly real moments) but well presented, the toys are outstanding. My only dislike was the use of Tommy Lee Jones as the voice of one of the characters: he's never been a personal favourite and he is generally too famous for the rest of the cast (perhaps he was chosen to put a name in the credits, the critic said cynically).

But the ultimate compliment was paid by a member of the target audience (boys who like toys) who said,"It was good... I want one!"
