Theatrical report

I went Into this film fairly pessimistic, as I do when I am going to see a sequel, let alone a 4th sequel.

The Shrek films have done a great job at continuing the story on as long as they have. The first two films were brilliant but by the third and fourth It was overkill. I can't help but feel that it seems like filmmaking for the sake of making more films. It wasn't all bad. It still had Its witty sense of humour and feel-good ending but not anywhere near to the same degree as the originals. There wasn't much play on popular culture references which made the Shrek films so entertaining. The visuals were up to par, and visually stimulating, but like most sequel attempts they tend to go over the top with the CGI the next time round with all the cash they took in from the last movie - it becomes about the action ride Instead about the actual character journey.

I must confess that I wasn't quite sure where the story was going for the first half. I liked that It was unpredictable but I found myself drifting off. The second half was more entertaining when the characters are reunited in a new way, but in general the character relationships and interactions seemed majorly lacking compared to the previous films.

Shrek was always the sceptical likeable grump whilst the others complimented his adventures with Fiona, but I think Shrek was outdone by Puss-in-boots and Fiona this time round. Even Donkey seemed bland this time round. Fair play - in the story they are different characters when Shrek signs a deal with Rumplestiltskin and goes back in time. I get that the mood needs to be darker I just think It had more potential, would have been great to see them have more fun with  the characters.

However considering it is no. 4 I think they have done a good job. It was never going to live up to the first films. It is worthy of a cinema visit - maybe on cheap Tuesday - but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it, it wasn't the most memorable comeback which is a real shame.

The animation, comedy, fantasy movie Shrek forever after Is directed by Mike Mitchell and stars Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy.
