Movie propaganda
Set in the present, this bitter-sweet dramatic-comedy tells the story of Jill Rose (Geraldine Brophy), a mother who has spent years preparing for her daughter Cheryl's eventual wedding by sourcing second-hand bargains to be used on the 'big' day.
But Jill's bargain hunting has left Cheryl (Holly Shanahan) with a dilemma. How can she tell her mother that she doesn't want the happiest day of her life turned into a 'second-hand wedding'?
Afraid of what may happen, Cheryl decides to plan her wedding her way - even if it means keeping Mother out!

Theatrical report
Second-hand wedding is a schizophrenic little film from New Zealand that tries to straddle the gap between comedy and tragedy but ends up with a split seam in the crotch of its trousers. (Whether showing your knickers is a comedy or a tragedy depends rather on who is wearing the pants.) For my taste there is rather too much tragedy to be a comedy and not enough comedy to be a tragedy; there's nothing funnier in life than seeing someone else come a cropper. Schadenfreude. Gotta love those Germans for coming up with a word that needs a whole sentence in English.
Still, there's something to be said for a film that features garage sales as a major plot point. As an aficionado of street treasure, I can appreciate a bargain. One man's meat may be another man's poison but one man's trash is another man's treasure. You wouldn't believe what some people throw out. I'm going to have to get a ute just so that I can pick all this stuff up. Woo hoo!
Should you see Second-hand wedding? Nah, see Boy instead. It's funnier, more tragic, and they all still have funny accents.
The comedy, New Zealand movie Second-hand wedding is directed by Paul Murphy and stars Geraldine Brophy, Patrick Wilson, Holly Shanahan.
