The sea inside (Mar adentro) - Javier Bardem, Belén Rueda, Lola Dueñas, Alejandro Amenábar

Movie propaganda

Quadriplegic from an accident, Ramón Sampedro (Javier Bardem) has been bedridden for almost 30 years. His only view of the world is the one of the sea, afforded by his bedroom window, so he decides to end his life with dignity. Two women will affect his life: Julia (Belén Rueda), a lawyer that wants to support his cause; and Rosa (Lola Dueñas), a neighbour who wants to convince him that life is worth living.

In a departure from his previous genre pieces, director Alejandro Amenábar explores the theme of euthanasia in a moving drama about freedom and personal choices. Based on a true story, The sea inside puts us in the mind set of the main character, as he remembers and fantasises about life as it should've been. Javier Bardem, perhaps the best Spanish-speaking actor of his generation, renders another remarkable tour-de-force as Ramón Sampedro.
