Theatrical report

The re-invented Doctor Who has three streams, based on their intended audience: family (Doctor Who), adults (Torchwood) and now children (The Sarah Jane adventures). As befits children's television, the story is light and the characters are easy to get a handle on, although hopefully they will get heavier and slipperier as the series progresses.

It's good to catch up with some of the characters from the early series as it gives continuity to the universe, not to mention allowing parents (let's face it: fathers) to share something with their children (all right: sons). Having returning characters allows the brain to build stronger neural networks, tying the viewer to the show and giving them more pleasure whenever they watch it as the network is reinforced. And it's more fun; everyone likes those "Where are they now?" shows.

But I digress. I blame it on Facebook. The Sarah Jane adventures: Invasion of the Bane is exactly what you think it will be: Doctor Who for 'tweens. I liked it but I didn't love it. I'm a David Tennant man. Use this DVD to addict your children to science fiction, then you can buy them other DVDs "to help their collection along".

The science fiction, UK movie The Sarah Jane adventures: Invasion of the Bane is directed by Colin Teague and stars Elisabeth Sladen, Yasmin Paige, Tommy Knight.
