Movie propaganda

Do not disturb them. They already are.

This is an adaptation of Augusten Burroughs' novel, this is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her unorthodox psychiatrist who bore a striking resemblance to Santa Claus. So at the age of twelve, Burroughs found himself amidst Victorian squalor living with the doctor's bizarre family, and befriending a paedophile who resided in the backyard shed. The story of an outlaw childhood where rules were unheard of, and the Christmas tree stayed up all year round, where Valium was consumed like candy, and if things got dull an electroshock-therapy machine could provide entertainment.

Theatrical report

I have start by saying that Running with scissors is one of the best titles in the history of cinema.

And then I'll say that Running with scissors is one of the best arguments for forced sterilisation in the history of cinema.

And this is real life.

Meanwhile, the actors really eat up the script and direction from Ryan Murphy. Annette Bening's Deirdre Burroughs is vile. If there's a psychiatric disorder to be had then it seems she's not just had it, she's taken out a patent. To add to that she's a poet. Poetry is bad enough when it comes from a teenager but a teenager's mother takes it to the next level. Cue adjective: hideous. Joseph Cross' Augusten Burroughs is wonderfully overwhelmed by his never-ending descent into Bad Poet Hell™ and the Physician Heal Thyself™ madhouse. If you're so bored that you need to play Electroshock Therapy then you really need help.

*Shudders*

You don't have to be in therapy to see Running with scissors but it really helps. Medication is good, too. Lots of it.

The Augusten Burroughs, biography movie Running with scissors is directed by Ryan Murphy and stars Annette Bening, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Cross.
