Movie propaganda

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in The Runaways - a coming-of-age biopic about the ground-breaking all-girl teenage rock band of the 1970s. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film recounts Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and her friend Cherie Currie's (Dakota Fanning) rise from rebellious Southern California teens to headliners of the now-legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands.

Guitarist-singer Joan, drummer Sandy West (Stella Maeve) and lead guitarist Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton) join forces with singer Cherie under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon). With her home life in tatters, Cherie adopts the band as her new family - especially Joan, who becomes her partner-in-crime and sometime lover. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself - and so do its two leads: Joan is the band's pure rock 'n' roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is cast in the role of sex kitten.

But during a tour of Japan at the peak of the band's Quaalude-popping success, drugs and personality clashes drive a wedge between the girls that builds to a flash point, leading to an emotional and surprising conclusion. The Runaways is the story of two troubled teenage girls whose turbulent friendship becomes the stuff of rock 'n' roll legend.

Theatrical report

So... if you know who Cherie Currie is, then you'll find this film interesting. If you're a historian specialising in chick rock bands of the 70s, then you'll love it. If you know who Joan Jett is, then you'll like it. If you grew up in the 70s, then you'll enjoy it. If you're none of the above, then you won't like it at all. The Runaways has a specialist audience and no matter how well the film recreates the era, it's the story that drives a biography and, to me, Cherie Currie's story is pretty small. It's hard to get into a movie about someone of whom you've never heard, especially when the second protagonist is someone of whom I have heard. Who doesn't know Joan Jett? Who doesn't love rock & roll? Put another dime in the jukebox, baby.

The Cherie Currie biography movie The Runaways is directed by Floria Sigismondi and stars Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon.
