Theatrical report
Wow!I have never seen an episode of Rugrats since I hardly ever watch TV (except for The bill) but I am certainly aware of its existence (as it appears On video every month). The deflowering of his movie-maidenhead by The rugrats movie was an awesomely cool experience.
The animation is superb, from the multi-planed fantasy opening sequence (an homage to Raiders of the lost ark) to the reality of the rug. It's what Walt Disney would've done if he was still alive.
The story is almost as good as the animation - going on the big roller coaster ride that is the birth of a baby brother (I wouldn't really know about that since I am the little brother - but I've had enough nephews and nieces to understand what's going on).
There are some really scary bits (scary enough to scare me, not just the two boys sitting beside him - and that's scary!), much scarier than your average animation and that's good. Parents shelter their kids too much these days. Why, when I was a boy, I and my (big) brother used to go out all hours of the day, hunting in the wilds, wandering down streams and rivers, sailing home-made rafts, throwing rocks at the witch's house... nowadays a kid's lucky if they can sit at home and kill virtual things.
Anyhoo, this is a brilliantly funny, witty, entertaining and scary film which works for kids and groan-ups in equal quantities. Borrow a rugrat and see it!
