Theatrical report
The rite is not for the the faint-hearted. This movie shows some fantastical scenes of a young girl possessed.
With exorcism as a regular and common occurrence in the life of Father Lucas Trevant, its only a matter of time before he himself gets in touch with the dark side and becomes possessed.
After failing an exorcism Father Lucas, played by Anthony Hopkins, becomes weak and the Devil takes him over. With a young, inexperienced, non-believing apprentice by his side, played by Colin O'Donoghue, Father Michael Kovak is his only hope of defeat.
Well-directed by Mikael Håfström and with Anthony Hopkins sharing his talent in the starring role, The rite is a go-see. For those who like a bit of horror it's got some good moments. So few movies these days have any "scare quality", but this one comes close.
Colin O'Donoghue plays a young guy trying to please his family, but, after entering the priesthood, he realises it's not for him. His character is dark and if you can cop one smile throughout the movie it's probably superimposed; this character takes himself way to seriously. As a young and quite handsome actor I hope his next movie is of the American Pie variety.
The horror, supernatural, thriller movie The rite is directed by Mikael Håfström and stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O'Donoghue, Ciarán Hinds.
