The joke's on you!

The sleeker, deadlier and seemingly immortal clown prince of crime is back with his own unique brand of havoc and mayhem. While trying to uncover the Joker's (Mark Hamill) secrets, the new Batman, Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle) discovers the greatest mystery in the life of the original caped crusader: what happened the night he fought the Joker for the last time. When Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) is almost killed in one of the joker's latest attacks, Batman vows to avenge his mentor and put the Joker to rest forever.

Theatrical report

Cool.

Return of the Joker picks up a whole heap of Batman strands and weaves them into a coherent whole. It also takes the earliest characters and gives them lives after their eternal youth. Even superheroes grow old.

Gone also is the camp of the original TV series and the weirdness of the movies, replaced with the new world order. Fifty years on and the world is a very different place than it is today. And also reassuringly familiar. Some people want more than they deserve, others give more than they have. If you've been watching the next generation on TV you'll know all about it but for the newbie there's lots of fun stuff to learn. It's like the change from the original series of Star trek to The next generation. Different, but good.

Terry is an interesting character - there's nothing like being a street punk to give you some attitude - and the antagonistic way he and Bruce interact is a refreshing change from Dick Grayson's obsequiousness. I like the fact that Bruce has turned into a somewhat bitter ex-superhero, as caught up in his failures as he is in his successes. They didn't call him the Dark Knight for nothing.

Return of the Joker is a cool addition to the Batman oeuvre with lots of action, anger and mystery (even I didn't guess the identity of the new Joker). You'll like it.
