Theatrical report

Red Road is creepy, and I don't mean that in a good way. How do these psychotic people get into positions of power? Doesn't the security industry do checks on its employees? [Evidently not, given all those New South Wales security guards who suddenly resigned when the police threatened to do background checks. - Director of Intelligence.]

Meanwhile, you won't believe what Jackie puts herself through. I would say that it's unbelievable but broken people often do the most amazingly stupid things, things that horrify the average punter (that's you, I hope). Andrea Arnold captures the astoundingness of these acts by drawing you into a mystery without resorting to the standard beginning-middle-end structure - instead, you're dropped into the deep end, where it's every special agent for himself. As Jackie's behaviour drifts further and further from normal you're dragged along with her until you find yourself up to your neck in it. It's yucky (and creepy).

If you like a bit of haggis with your mystery thrills then Red Road is the perfect film for you.

The drama, thriller, UK movie Red Road is directed by Andrea Arnold and stars Kate Dickie, Tony Curran, Martin Compston.
