At 18, Ana (America Ferrera) has a bright future. She is the first in her family who can dare to dream of going to university, but she is trapped by her modest Latino upbringing in East LA.
The film offers another round in the combative relationship between mother and daughter. Ana's long-suffering and traditional mother (Lupe Ontiveros) has given up on Ana's elder sister and sweat shop owner Estela (Ingrid Oliu), and is desperate to marry Ana off to produce the grandchildren she believes she deserves. Her husband Raul (Jorge Cevera) shares his daughter's dream to study in New York but does not want to tear the family apart.
In order to avert a family economic crisis, Ana reluctantly pitches in to complete an order of glamorous dresses for her sister's sweat shop, and sets about teaching her female co-workers how to rethink their values - and how to love every curve of their bodies!
