When her sister (Felicity Huffman) and brother-in-law die in a car accident, a young modelling agency assistant, Helen (Kate Hudson), takes on the role as guardian of their surviving three children: teenager Audrey (Hayden Panettiere), 10-year-old Kenny (Spencer Breslin) and kindergartner Sarah (Abigail Breslin).
