Theatrical report
Prince of Persia: the sands of time is an entertaining adventure film with camels. And ostriches. There's also a lot of jumping around and waving swords at people. Strangely, for all the sword-waving, there's not a lot of blood. I'm guessing that's to get past the censors in the US. bloody Puritans.
Jake Gyllenhaal is great as the wild Prince Dastan: he's handsome, he's swashbuckling and he's funny. He does a lot of his stunts himself but they cut the best ones out and used a stuntman instead. It is way too obvious. It's even worse that the CGI of William Foster as young Dastan doing jumps and stuff. You'd think that they could make it seamless by now. As for Ben Kingsley, well, I'm sick of seeing him as the dusky, dastardly baddie: he's more than that!
I did like the use of English accents by all the characters as it made the film seem like one of those golden oldies that came out of Britain in the first half of the 20th century, when they still had an Empire, before Hollywood ruled the world. And it doesn't annoy all the people who think of themselves as Persians (rather than members of the modern Arab states) because the only other accent would belong to Yanks and you can imagine how well that would go down.
There's not a lot of surprise in Prince of Persia: the sands of time, but it's still full of entertainment: it's another one of those video game to movie things and you know what they're like. Great way to pass a couple of hours in the dark with a box of popcorn.
The adventure, fantasy movie Prince of Persia: the sands of time is directed by Mike Newell and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley.
