Movie propaganda

In a small town by the sea lives five year-old Sosuke, high on a cliff overlooking the Inland Sea. One morning while playing on the rocky beach below his house, he discovers a goldfish named Ponyo, her head stuck in a jam jar. Sosuke rescues Ponyo and keeps her in a green plastic pail.

Both Ponyo and Sosuke are fascinated by each other and promise to stay firm friends until Ponyo's father - once human, now a sorcerer who lives deep under the sea - forces her to return with him to the ocean depths. What follows is an amazing underwater adventure for all ages...

Theatrical report

Ponyo on the cliff by the sea (Gake no ue no Ponyo) is another delightful little film from Japan's Studio Ghibli. While lacking the freshness of Spirited away (Sen to chihiro no kamikakushi) it maintains the innocent child's view of the world. Although not as funny or scary (or as full of merchandising opportunities) as Finding Nemo, it has something of the same sweet aspect. It's a bit like those strange desserts the Japanese eat that taste like glue to a Western palate yet are strangely moorish. A great multi-cultural taste sensation for the whole family.

The anime, fantasy, Japan movie Ponyo on the cliff by the sea (Gake no ue no Ponyo) is directed by Hayao Miyazaki and stars Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Noah Cyrus.
