The world's biggest musical!

Another telling of the popular Broadway musical, based on Gaston Leroux's original novel, this new version will be directed by Joel Schumacher. The story is about a deranged, disfigured masked man, the Phantom (Gerard Butler), who roams around the Paris Opera House, haunting the actors and actresses. He falls for the young soprano, Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum), and tutors her so well she passes another soprano (Minnie Driver) as the city's best. He's smitten and wants Christine for his own, but she still has feelings for a childhood love, Raoul Viscount de Changey (Patrick Wilson). Feeling betrayed, the Phantom kidnaps Christine with plans to make her his eternal bride.

Theatrical report

This version of The phantom of the opera disappointed me, even though it did help to explain some stuff from the stage version. Here are the Rules of Musicals™:

  1. Cast people who can sing all the notes without transposing the key or dropping/jumping an octave.
  2. Cast people who can act/perform the role.
  3. Cast people who look the part.
  4. Cast people who are famous.
  5. Don't let the director get creative: the notes are there to be sung, not "performed".

Phantom doesn't adhere to all these rules; you can have fun picking the bits where they cheated.
