Shortly after filming begins, Charlyne meets actor Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, the pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a new urgency when Yi risks losing the person closest to her heart. Theatrical report

Paper heart is a bit of a mind-fuck. First it's a documentary, then it's a romance, then it's a drama, but wait, it's a documentary... argh! Isn't it fun not knowing what's going on? Charlyne Yi is an unsympathetic character because she doesn't believe in love. Lemme tell ya, it's real: it wouldn't hurt this bad if it wasn't. Michael Cera is a sympathetic character because he does believe in love. Lemme tell ya: I couldn't tell if it was real or not. Does he love her or is he acting? How convenient for a documentary about love to have the documentarist fall in love. But real life is full of serendipitous moments, like the dude who was making a documentary about New York fire-fighters on 11 September 2001. So where does the documentary end and the romance begin? This question frustrated me throughout the whole movie. I even had to google "Michael Cera relationship with Charlyne Yi", which cleared everything up. Sort of. Did they, didn't they?

Paper heart is a mediocre documentary woven in with a mediocre love story that manages to create a synergy out of conflicting genres. You can't fake love, but Michael and Charlyne seem to do it. Or do they?

The comedy, drama, romance movie Paper heart is directed by Nicholas Jasenovec and stars Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera, Jake M Johnson.
