Unlocked from the imagination of one of the world's most original directors Pan's labyrinth is a gothic fairy tale twist on Alice in Wonderland and The changeling. Set against the bloody back-drop of the Spanish civil war, 10-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is sent to an isolated mansion with her heavily pregnant mother. Lonely and intimidated by her new step-father, Ofelia discovers an overgrown labyrinth where she meets Pan (Doug Jones), an ancient satyr. Fascinated by fairy tales, Ofelia is captivated by Pan and his stories of the fairy world.

However, when her mother falls ill Ofelia makes a pact with Pan in order to save her. In exchange, Ofelia must undertake three challenges to prove her worth. These challenges take her on a journey to another world where she must use her wit and guile to overcome the creatures that lurk beneath.

Theatrical report

Pay attention: War is stupid, people are stupid and love means nothing in some strange quarters.

Pan's labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno) is the kind of film you should take your kids to so that:

  1. They get scared (there's too much G-rating going on in kids' movies);
  2. They learn that life is not all beer and skittles;
  3. They learn that bastards are everywhere;
  4. They learn that wars aren't worth starting.

The horror, Spain movie Pan's labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno) is directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Ivana Baquero, Doug Jones, Sergi López.
