Young mother Kate Coleman (Vera Farmiga) is devastated by the loss of a baby and her inability to conceive again. She and her husband John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt another child in order to fill the empty space in their broken hearts. Little could they know that the child they adopt Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) would turn out to be anything other than what they'd hoped for.
