Movie propaganda
One man's hero is another man's traitor.
This intriguing film tells the powerful true tale of the Saint Patrick battalion, a group of soldiers enlisted from Ireland to fight a brutal war between the USA and Mexico. Solid performances from Tom Berenger, Joaquim de Almeida and Patrick Bergin as General Winfield Scott drive home this film's universal and poignant story about standing up for one's beliefs in the face of adversity.
Life in the USA Army during the Mexican-American war of 1846 was gruelling and no one knew that better than Irish immigrant and career soldier, Sergeant John Reilly (Tom Berenger). But when a small group of his fellow compatriots are treated harshly for their religious convictions, Reilly takes up their cause and leads them in a desperate escape for their lives across the border into Mexico. Now, Reilly and his Irish deserters must convince Mexican rebel leader Cortina (Joaquim de Almeida) to let them join in his fight against the USA so they can be given the chance to live free in a country that will welcome them more than the one they left behind.
Also starring Daniela Romo as Marta, Mark Moses as Colonel Benton Lacy, Stuart Graham as Corporal Kenneally, James Gammon as General Zachary Taylor, Stephen Tobolowsky as Captain Gaine, Carlos Carrasco as Dominguez, Don Wycherley as Brian Athlone and Jorge Bosso as Colonel Maximo Nexor. Written by Milton S Gelman, directed by Lance Hool.
