Theatrical report
The million dollar hotel, with a less well-known cast, a less coherent script and a little too much self-indulgence on the part of the director. If you haven't seen The million dollar hotel then Night at the Golden Eagle does well enough: it's dirty, it's dingy, it's disgusting, but The million dollar hotel is worth a million dollars whereas Night at the Golden Eagle is just worth... a golden eagle. There is too much telling and not enough showing (the first rule for writing fiction is "show, don't tell"): people in this part of LA seem to have nothing better to do than stand around revealing their life history to people with whom they grew up. The characters talk at each other rather than to each other. The camera work is profligate, as if this is the film that will be used as Adam Rifkin's business card. The acting is earnest, and that's a dreadful adjective to have to use about an occupation that is all about passion. The basis of the story is a cliché.
In the end, Night at the Golden Eagle is some vaguely interesting ideas that you might like to use in your next filmmaking 201 assignment but nothing you should include in a feature film. Watch The million dollar hotel instead.
