Can you get a life and discover love, all in one day? Two women are about to find out.

In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must - for the first time in two decades - seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level - as "social secretary." Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams).

Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu - and, within hours, living it up. Taking the "social secretary" designation to heart, she tries to help her new friend Delysia navigate a love life and career, both of which are complicated by the three men in Delysia's orbit; devoted pianist Michael (Lee Pace), intimidating nightclub owner Nick (Mark Strong), and impressionable junior impresario Phil (Tom Payne). Miss Pettigrew herself is blushingly drawn to the gallant Joe (Ciarán Hinds), a successful designer who is tenuously engaged to haughty fashion maven Edythe (Shirley Henderson) - the one person who senses that the new "social secretary" may be out of her element, and schemes to undermine her.

Over the next 24 hours, Guinevere and Delysia will empower each other to discover their romantic destinies.

Theatrical report

Miss Pettigrew lives for a day is about the end of the servant era (after World War II few can afford them and those that remain call themselves Personal Assistants), wrapped in a romantic haze of Western decadence and bucket-loads of cash. These are the off-stage shenanigans of the cast of Mrs Henderson presents. The first half is something of a bedroom farce with doors, servants, mistresses, boyfriends and sugar daddies in abundance. The second half is a bit slower as sex goes out the window and love comes in the door. What's a girl to do: sex and money or true love and adventure? This is the big dilemma of Miss Pettigrew lives for a day and it's not enough to carry a drama but will do for a romantic comedy. There are some good characterisations, and Lee Pace is cute, but this film won't change your life. But that isn't why you're going to see it, is it?

The drama, romance, UK movie Miss Pettigrew lives for a day is directed by Bharat Nalluri and stars Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Lee Pace.
