One woman. Three fathers. Four sons. No-one said love was simple.

A woman lives in a house with her three husbands. Departing from this curious fact, the director Andrucha Waddington and the screenwriter Elena Soárez created a completely fictitious story that mingles humour and passion and narrates the development of this unusual love quartet lead by Darlene Linhares (Regina Casé) and her three husbands: Osias (Lima Duarte), Zezinho (Stênio Garcia) and Ciro (Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos).

Theatrical report

Hoo boy! You wanna see grinding poverty on the scale of Not one less? You wanna see a romance that's as far removed from The road home as Brazil is from China? You wanna see a woman who makes La spagnola look like la Prima Donna? Well here it is. Me you them is a timeless story of peons sweating blood and tears, finding small moments of happiness that would drive a modern Australian to despair.

Regina is the sensual earth mother who exudes fertility in a way that the parched earth around her does not. Lima, Stênio & Luiz are fractions of men, good for one thing but not for many, hence the polygamy. Hey, if it works, don't break it. Never let any one else's morals get in the way of happiness.

The sheer effort required to survive is mind-numbing for people living relaxed and comfortably in traditional family Australia. Even those at the bottom of the food chain are wealthy compared to Darlene and her family. Dirt floors, gathering firewood for cooking, building a house out of sticks and mud, 12 hour working days with half an hour for lunch all on half pay... now that's relaxed and comfortable!

Like all the good non-English films that come your way, Me you them doesn't really need the subtitles; there's very little that they add to the film for the amount that they detract. The cinematography is often breath-taking, in a hot and dusty kind of way, and the final scene is so perfectly composed that you could frame it and hang it on the wall. Me you them is the kind of film which you wish that you'd made, but as you didn't, you'll have to go and see it and share it that way.
